Tourism Corporation, EBS, and Overseas Koreans Foundation Selected as 'Model Public Institutions for COVID-19 Crisis Management' COVID-19 Performance Management Global Evaluation Team Awards Ceremony.

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] The Korea Tourism Organization, the Educational Broadcasting System (EBS), and the Overseas Koreans Foundation have been selected as the most exemplary public institutions in COVID-19 crisis management.

The 'COVID-19 Crisis Management Global Evaluation Team' (led by Choi Sung) composed of domestic and overseas industry-academia-research experts held the '2021 COVID Crisis Management Awards Ceremony' on the afternoon of the 1st at the Seoul Press Center and awarded the grand prize to these three institutions.

In the corporate sector, the ‘K-Quarantine Platform Project Group,’ a consortium centered on the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business Owners, won the grand prize. They were recognized for their efforts to enable 155 excellent domestic SMEs to enter 50 countries worldwide with K-Quarantine products.

The ‘Unsung Hero of Overcoming the COVID Crisis’ was awarded to Lee Wan-bae, the village chief of Tongilchon Village in the DMZ. Despite the dual difficulties of constant inter-Korean tensions and the COVID crisis, Lee Wan-bae was recognized for his efforts to secure the livelihoods of local residents by seeking sales channels for local specialties.

In the education welfare policy sector, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education received the grand prize; in the global leader sector, Min Byung-chul, chairman of the Sunfull Foundation; and in the K-Quarantine and global leadership fields, Paula Park, president of the Washington Korean Association, each received sector-specific grand prizes.

In the local government sector, 15 local governments including Daejeon Metropolitan City, Chungcheongnam-do Province, and Nonsan City in Chungnam received grand prizes, 5 local governments received excellence awards, and 1 local government received a merit award.

Team leader Choi Sung stated, "The active participation of local governments and their outstanding COVID crisis management achievements have been confirmed, and it has been verified that the true strength of Korea’s K-Quarantine started from local governance involving citizens," adding, "The effective operation of a smart crisis management system among education offices, public institutions, and citizens confirms that the true unsung hero of COVID crisis management is the ‘great Korean civic solidarity.’"

Choi also said, “We will seek new directions through communication with the selected grand prize institutions and honorees,” and “We are actively considering conducting an academic evaluation of the COVID crisis management achievements confirmed through this contest at the summer academic conference of the Korean Local Autonomy Association to be held in Jeju Island this August.”
