Personal Information Protection Commission to Operate Pseudonymized Data Expert Pool... Expanding to Around 100 Members Within the Year

Appointment of 45 Experts in the First Round

[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Personal Information Protection Commission and the Korea Internet & Security Agency announced that they have formed a pool of pseudonymized information experts and will begin its operation from the 28th to actively support the safe use of pseudonymized information.

This measure was taken in response to opinions raised that frontline sites face a shortage of professionals, causing burdens in utilizing pseudonymized information. Going forward, experts will review whether pseudonymization has been appropriately performed when institutions use pseudonymized information, and will support ensuring safety in accordance with personal information protection laws when combined pseudonymized information is exported.

The 45 experts appointed in the first round were mainly composed of those who previously served as an evaluation team for the adequacy of de-identification measures or have extensive related experience. The Personal Information Protection Commission plans to complete the formation of an expert group of around 100 members within the year by conducting the 2nd and 3rd appointments in July for nominees recommended by related organizations and in November for those who have completed the pseudonymized information expert training course, respectively.

Information such as the biographies of the appointed pseudonymized information experts will be disclosed on the Personal Information Protection Portal website and the Pseudonymized Information Integration Support System website during their 3-year activity period.

Institutions and companies requiring adequacy review of pseudonymization or export examination can autonomously consult with experts to proceed with their tasks. If necessary, experts can also be recommended through the Korea Internet & Security Agency.

The Personal Information Protection Commission plans to hold education and work training once a year to strengthen the capabilities of appointed experts and share the latest trends. Lee Jeong-ryeol, Director of the Personal Information Policy Bureau at the Personal Information Protection Commission, said, “Institutions demanding the use of pseudonymized information will be able to receive expert support during the adequacy review of pseudonymization and export examination processes through the experts appointed this time,” adding, “We will continue to support the active use of pseudonymized information by reflecting field opinions and providing customized education and consulting.”
