[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Hyundai Motor and Kia have surpassed 200,000 cumulative electric vehicle sales in Europe.
According to Hyundai Motor and Kia on the 27th, they sold a total of 227,919 electric vehicles in the European market up to May this year. Hyundai Motor sold 131,719 units, and Kia sold 96,200 units.
Following the achievement of 100,000 cumulative sales last year, they exceeded 200,000 units in just one year. This is a result achieved seven years after Kia began selling electric vehicles in Europe with the Soul EV in 2014.
Electric vehicle sales, which were only 662 units in 2014, surpassed 10,000 units annually for the first time in 2017 and have continued to grow steadily since then.
This year, up to last month, 43,865 units were sold, an increase of 99.5% compared to the same period last year, and it is expected to exceed 100,000 units in annual sales for the first time.
By model, the Kona EV recorded cumulative sales of 91,302 units, followed by the Niro EV with 58,774 units. Next were the Ioniq (old model) EV with 40,003 units and the Soul EV with 37,426 units.
In the second half of this year, with the full-scale sales launch of Hyundai Motor Group’s first dedicated electric vehicle, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia’s dedicated electric vehicle, the EV6, Hyundai Motor Group’s electric vehicle sales are expected to increase further.
