[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Some fans who watched the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship (Euro 2020) matches in Europe, where the Delta variant is spreading, have tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the Associated Press on the 25th (local time), Danish health authorities announced that at least seven people who watched the Euro 2020 match held in the capital Copenhagen the day before tested positive for COVID-19.

In particular, at least three of them were confirmed to be infected with the India-origin Delta variant.

A Danish health official explained that the three Delta variant cases were infected separately and independently during the match.

About 4,000 spectators watched the match held on the 17th at the stadium. Danish authorities urged all of them to undergo COVID-19 testing.

The safety and security officer of the match said that people were sitting very close to each other during the game.

Danish health authorities reported that there have been 29 infection cases related to three Euro 2020 matches recently held in Denmark. All spectators of these matches were required to present documents proving they were not infected with COVID-19 before entering the stadium.

Additionally, Finnish health authorities stated that nearly 100 Finnish nationals who watched the Euro 2020 match recently held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, have been infected with COVID-19, and the number is likely to increase.

Since the Finnish team’s match was held in Saint Petersburg this month, major foreign media reported that Finland’s daily new confirmed cases have increased from about 50 to over 100.
