Sex Offender Notification via Naver App... Household Heads Protecting Youth Targeted

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] From July, information on sex offenders will be available on the Naver mobile app as well.

On the 27th, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced that it has added the Naver app as a mobile notification method for sex offender information notices.

Following the introduction of mobile notifications via KakaoTalk in November last year, the service has now been expanded to include the Naver app. If the first notification via KakaoTalk is not viewed, a second notification will be sent through the Naver app. If the second notification is also not viewed, the notice will be sent by mail.

According to the Ministry, from November last year to May this year, 2.5 million mobile notifications of sex offender information were sent, of which 1.8 million were received.

The sex offender information notice is sent when a sex offender moves in or out of a residence, targeting the head of households protecting children and adolescents under 19 years old in the relevant administrative district, as well as heads of daycare centers, kindergartens, schools, academies, local children's centers, youth training facilities, and heads of town offices and community centers.

The mobile notification is limited to heads of households protecting children and adolescents. Other household members must apply separately through the Sex Offender Notification e-website or app to check the information.

Article 51 of the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles from Sexual Abuse limits the recipients of notification information to heads of households with children and adolescents, and does not provide notification services to other parties.

Hwang Yoon-jung, Director of the Rights Promotion Bureau at the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, said, "We expect that providing quick and convenient access to sex offender information will raise awareness and prevention effects regarding sex crimes," adding, "We will continue to gradually expand notification methods to improve information accessibility and reduce the budget for postal delivery."
