Creation of Baegunje Forest Garden in Bonggang, Gwangyang

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do announced on the 25th that it has created the Baegunje Scenic Forest and Mugunghwa Garden on 1ha around Baegunje in Bonggang-myeon to respond to climate change through the creation of forests around living areas.

The Baegunje Scenic Forest was selected in 2021 as part of the ‘Making Jeonnam a Forest’ resident and organization participation forest contest project, and was promoted by Gwangyang City. The project completed △ maintenance of walking trails △ planting of 2,275 trees including Golden Locust, Red Oak, and Zelkova △ creation of a lawn resting area.

The Mugunghwa Garden was planted with 3,843 plants including 10 species of Mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon), Golden Euonymus, and Boxwood, designed in the shape of Mugunghwa flower petals to raise citizens’ interest in the beautiful national flower Mugunghwa and to allow easy and familiar access to Mugunghwa around living areas.

Additionally, a section of Baegunje will host the ‘Three Major Family Gardens in the Forest of Jeonnam’ event, organized by the (Corporation) Forest of Jeonnam and hosted by Jeollanam-do, scheduled for around October 2021.

If the family garden is created, it is expected to provide a beautiful and pleasant healing space along with the maze garden, lawn resting area, and Mugunghwa Garden, contributing to the improvement of residents’ quality of life.

The city plans to thoroughly maintain and manage the forest by deploying professionals such as members of the Bonggang-myeon Village Leaders Association and the Urban Forest Garden Management Team to continuously provide beautiful forests.

Kim Jae-bok, Director of the Greenery Division, said, “We thank the residents of Bonggang-myeon and related parties who showed interest and cooperation in creating the Baegunje Scenic Forest and the national flower Mugunghwa Garden as part of ‘Making Jeonnam a Forest,’” and added, “We will do our best to maintain the beautiful forest garden.”

He added, “Participants for the Three Major Family Gardens will be selected through a future announcement, so we ask for your great interest.”
