A Pioneer in Climate Prediction Field with Over 170 Published Papers
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Professor Kang Insik, Emeritus Professor at Seoul National University, became the first Korean to receive the International Meteorological Organization (IMO) Prize.
On the 25th, the 73rd Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) selected Professor Kang Insik as the recipient of the 66th International Meteorological Organization Prize. The WMO awards this prize annually to individuals who have made significant achievements in the field of meteorology and climate, and Professor Kang was recognized for his contributions to the WMO World Climate Research Program.
Professor Kang has published over 170 SCI papers related to meteorology and climate. As of June, his work has been cited more than 11,400 times on Google Scholar, establishing him as a pioneer in the field of climate prediction.
Professor Kang has served as the head of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Seoul National University and director of the Seoul National University Climate and Environmental Systems Research Center. Since 2018, he has been the scientific director at the Second Institute of Oceanography, China.
Professor Kang Insik stated, "I am very honored to receive the International Meteorological Organization Prize from the World Meteorological Organization. Although I have continuously worked to advance climate research and prediction technology in Korea, there is still a long way to go. I will fulfill my duties as a climatologist by continuing research on climate change and nurturing future talents."
