[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The number of students diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past week reached 293, an increase of 26 from the previous week.
According to the Ministry of Education on the 24th, from the 17th to the 23rd, a total of 293 students and 37 staff members from kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide were infected with COVID-19. On average, 41.9 students and 5.3 staff members were confirmed positive each day.
The number of student cases increased for two consecutive weeks starting from the first week of June, then decreased last week, but has now risen again. The cumulative number of student COVID-19 cases this semester is 5,133, with a cumulative total of 774 staff cases.
As of 10 a.m. on the day, 61 schools, accounting for 0.3% of all kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools, were unable to hold in-person classes this week. This is a decrease of 105 schools compared to a week ago. By region, the schools unable to hold classes were 16 in Daejeon, 15 in Seoul, and 13 in Gyeonggi.
In an elementary school in Chuncheon City, Gangwon Province, confirmed cases occurred, and including the related school, a total of 2 schools had 10 students and 2 staff members confirmed positive. Testing of 448 related individuals resulted in all negative cases.
The number of students attending in-person classes in kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools (as of 4 p.m. the previous day) was 4,741,000, accounting for 79.9% of all students. By school level, 80.2% of elementary, 76.3% of middle, and 76.2% of high school students attended.
In the past week, 90 new university students and 13 staff members were confirmed positive. The cumulative number of confirmed university students and university staff cases are 2,286 and 231, respectively.
