[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] GS Retail announced on the 24th that it visited the Marine Corps units on Baengnyeongdo and Yeonpyeongdo Islands ahead of the 71st anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War and delivered 50 clothing dryers worth approximately 85 million KRW as consolation gifts.
This event was arranged at the suggestion of the Ministry of National Defense during the process of GS Retail, which operates the Navy PX, and the Ministry seeking ways to boost the morale of military personnel by listening to their difficulties and wishes. The clothing dryers are the latest models from LG Electronics, and a total of 50 units were provided to the units on Baengnyeongdo and Yeonpyeongdo.
GS Retail has been supporting military personnel for over 20 years, including providing all daily necessities stored in the PX free of charge to about 2,000 soldiers and island residents when maritime logistics were cut off during the Yeonpyeongdo shelling in 2010. GS Retail has continued its military and patriotism-related activities, such as donating 100 million KRW to the Armed Forces Medical Command for MERS quarantine support in 2015, donating 100 million KRW to the Navy Headquarters in 2017, providing 100 million KRW worth of supplies to the Marine Corps Command in 2019, supporting the 50th Division Hwarang Unit, a key player in COVID-19 quarantine in Daegu and Gyeongbuk in 2020, and delivering donations to families of national veterans in 2021.
Oh Jin-seok, Vice President and Head of Convenience Store Business at GS Retail, said, “We are very grateful that all citizens can live with peace of mind thanks to the dedication of the military personnel protecting the country on the front lines,” adding, “We will continue to carry out various patriotism donation activities that resonate with the public and strengthen our corporate social responsibility.”
