At the event, President Jeon said, "I am pleased to discuss the infinite possibilities of wireless technology as we open the path to the next stage of 5G," explaining the achievements of Samsung Electronics' Network Business Division. He stated, "Samsung Electronics began proactive 5G research in 2009, even before 4G mobile communication was widely adopted, and succeeded in the world's first commercialization of 5G, leading the global 5G market. Currently, we provide 5G commercial services to 162 telecom operators in 68 countries worldwide, connecting approximately 300 million people through 5G."

He emphasized, "In the rapidly growing global 5G market, we have already secured more business contracts than for 4G by supplying over 4 million 5G base stations." Samsung Electronics is expanding its next-generation mobile communication business by signing 5G equipment supply contracts consecutively with Verizon, the No. 1 mobile carrier in the U.S. last year, and this year with NTT Docomo and Vodafone, the top carriers in Japan and Europe, respectively.

President Jeon cited technological prowess, especially in chipsets and software, as the key factors enabling this growth. He said, "With over 20 years of in-house chip design experience and unparalleled software capabilities, we are growing faster than ever in the 5G market. Going forward, through partnerships with leading companies and differentiated solutions, we will lead the acceleration into a hyper-connected era that seamlessly connects all things and people."

At the event, Samsung Electronics introduced ▷ next-generation core chips for base stations ▷ next-generation high-performance base station lineup ▷ One Antenna Radio solution ▷ 5G virtualized base station (vRAN) solution ▷ private network solutions, presenting a vision to expand and redefine the role of networks in individuals' daily lives and various industries through innovative technology.

"Higher Efficiency, Smaller Size" Three Next-Generation Core Chips for Base Stations

The next-generation core chips for base stations unveiled include three types: ▲ 2nd generation 5G modem chip (5G Modem SoC) ▲ 3rd generation millimeter-wave wireless communication chip (mmWave RFIC) ▲ integrated digital-to-analog conversion chip for wireless communication (DFE-RFIC Integrated Chip). Their common strengths are enhanced performance and power efficiency while reducing base station size. These core chips will be installed in the next-generation high-performance base station lineup launching next year.

First, the '2nd generation 5G modem chip' doubles data processing capacity compared to previous models while halving power consumption per cell and supports beamforming calculations, an essential function for 5G communication. The '3rd generation millimeter-wave wireless communication chip' supports two high-frequency bands (mmWave) at 28 GHz and 39 GHz and incorporates advanced technology that reduces antenna size by about 50%.

Lastly, the 'integrated digital-to-analog conversion chip for wireless communication' converts digital and analog signals used in low-frequency and ultra-high-frequency communications. It doubles the supported frequency bandwidth, increases wireless signal output of base stations, and enables miniaturization.

From New High-Performance Base Station Lineup to Antennas That Reduce Operating Costs

Samsung Electronics also introduced a new high-performance mobile communication base station lineup supporting ultra-high frequency and mid-band frequencies. The '3rd generation Dualband Compact Macro' base station is the industry's first to simultaneously support two ultra-high frequency bands and features the largest bandwidth of 2400 MHz among products disclosed so far.

The next-generation 'Massive MIMO Radio' base station, supporting the globally most widely deployed mid-band 5G frequencies, offers a 400 MHz wide bandwidth. Additionally, it applies new heat dissipation technology to increase maximum communication speed while reducing power consumption by 20% and size by 30%, making installation easier.

The 'One Antenna Radio' solution was also unveiled. This solution integrates a large-capacity massive MIMO base station supporting the 3.5 GHz band with passive antennas supporting from 700 MHz to 2.6 GHz bands, minimizing antenna installation space and enabling easy installation, which drastically reduces network operating costs.

Samsung Electronics further demonstrated its leadership in virtualized base stations and core areas by unveiling a commercial-level '5G virtualized base station (vRAN)' solution. The 5G vRAN installs dedicated software on general-purpose servers, connects to massive MIMO base stations, supports multi-gigabit data speeds, and is a viable option for ultra-high-speed 5G commercial networks.

Customized Solutions by Industry... Proactive Investment in 6G
"Capturing the Telecom Equipment Market" Samsung Electronics Massively Unveils '5G Network' Lineup (Comprehensive) Choi Seong-hyun, Head of the Next Generation Communication Research Center at Samsung Research, is introducing 6G at the 'Samsung Network: Redefining Communication' event held online on the 22nd.

At the event, Samsung Electronics unveiled solutions specialized for 'private networks,' a new domain in mobile communications, while sharing its vision for 6G technology.

Emphasizing the ability to propose customized 'private networks' tailored by business scale and industry using portfolios of communication equipment, management and operation systems, terminals, and applications, Samsung introduced its '5G Smart Factory' operating in Suwon Digital City and the national disaster safety communication network (PS-LTE) project in Korea.

Alongside this, Samsung highlighted its proactive investment in next-generation technologies, such as recent success in terahertz (THz) data communication, leading the new era of mobile communications, and stated it is also taking the lead in 6G technology investment.

Samsung Electronics stated that beyond 5G, with the advent of the 6G era, an era will come where extended reality (XR), ultra-high-resolution rendering, digital replication, and other industries will transcend physical and technological limits, enabling everything to happen at users' fingertips. Based on past technological innovations, Samsung will provide cutting-edge technologies and solutions.

Choi Sung-hyun, Head of Samsung Research's Next-Generation Communication Research Center, said, "Samsung has already demonstrated progress in 6G development by showcasing terahertz communication," adding, "Over the next 10 years, we will realize our vision to enable next-generation hyper-connected experiences throughout your lives."
