Dongjak-gu, Summer Vacation Online Native English Camp

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Changwoo Lee) will hold a native English speaker camp in preparation for the upcoming summer vacation.

The native English speaker camp has been organized since 2017 to provide high-quality English education by utilizing the excellent educational infrastructure of universities. This year, it will be conducted online to compensate for the learning gap caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic and to expand educational opportunities.

From 2017 to 2019, a total of 662 students participated in the English camp during vacation, showing a high satisfaction rate of 86.3% on average. However, it was not held last year to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The district will deepen the operation by signing an agreement this month with Yonsei University, which has experience in running native English speaker camps and securing excellent native instructors.

The recruitment target for this English camp is 110 elementary school students in grades 4 to 6 residing in the area. Applications can be submitted through the Participation & Communication tab on the district office website from the 24th to July 2nd, and the final selection will be announced after a computerized lottery.

Of the participation fee of 360,000 KRW per person, the district supports 50%, so the self-payment is 180,000 KRW. However, children from socially disadvantaged families, selected within about 15% of the recruitment quota, will receive full support for the participation fee.

Before the start of the camp, students' levels will be assessed through thorough level tests and telephone interviews, and classes will be organized with about 10 students per group to provide education appropriate to their level.

The education will be conducted non-face-to-face using an online video conferencing program from 2:00 PM for 1 hour and 30 minutes, from July 26 to August 20.

Each subject will be taught by a dedicated native English instructor, an elementary English education expert, and a Korean assistant instructor composed of Yonsei University students, collaborating to provide programs that enhance English learning abilities, including ▲ pronunciation practice and themed speaking ▲ proactive speaking using kits provided by level such as clay and calendars ▲ English expressions used in daily life ▲ learning the principles of science hidden in everyday life in English.

Additionally, the weekly learned class content will be uploaded to an online platform to share with friends, allowing students to review vocabulary, conversational expressions, grammar, and dialogue patterns, and to experience a sense of achievement.

Jongrok Jeong, head of the Education Policy Division, said, “Through the operation of this summer vacation native English speaker camp, we will provide a systematic and enjoyable opportunity for English learning,” and added, “We hope many interested students will participate.”
