Seongdong Life Safety Learning Center Marks 6 Years, Supports Safe Resident Life with Lifecycle Safety Education

Why Did Seongdong Life Safety Learning Center Provide Customized Education for Each Life Stage? Students receiving CPR training at Seongdong Life Safety Learning Center

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) Seongdong Life Safety Learning Center supports the safe daily lives of residents by promoting safety education tailored to different life stages.

Customized education is provided according to age and target groups based on major situations where risks may arise, targeting a wide range of groups from children aged 5 to 7 who can recognize danger, to elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as companies and private organizations.

The experiential education covers everything from dangerous situations in daily life such as elevator use to natural disaster preparedness like earthquakes. A permanent program has been established to prepare for life-threatening risks, including the use of fire extinguishers, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillators (AED), making it convenient and easy for anyone to receive education.

Last year, as the first in the nation, a ‘Live Safety Experience’ education was promoted, delivering experience kits containing CPR balloon dolls capable of simulating CPR and model fire extinguishers directly to applicants, providing an opportunity to learn online firsthand.

Despite the COVID-19 situation, there was a high response with about 930 participants. This year, online education has been expanded and structured as regular education. Emergency treatment education such as the Heimlich maneuver and infant CPR is also provided for those required to receive safety mandatory education, such as childcare teachers.

Additionally, a weekend water safety experience program on survival swimming and life jacket wearing methods has been prepared for elementary school students and their parents in the region to respond to seasonal risk situations. Elementary, middle, and high school students in the area receive education on CPR, earthquakes, and ship escape linked with village-wide experiential learning, with carefully prepared programs according to the target group.

Seongdong Life Safety Learning Center, established in 2015 as the first comprehensive safety experience center in a Seoul autonomous district, is directly managed and operated by the district. It conducts various safety programs in fields such as CPR and disaster safety, with a total of 41,822 people completing education including permanent and external training by last year.

In the same year, the nation’s first ‘Ordinance on the Protection of Life Safety for Children and Youth’ was enacted to support safe growth. This year, regular safety education is conducted with local universities (Hanyang University, Korea National Open University), and a ‘Visiting Safety Experience Vehicle’ linked with Seongdong Fire Station is also operated. The center, which was the first attempt, plans to continuously strive to become the safest learning center.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “The Life Safety Learning Center was proactively established for the safety of residents, allowing them to naturally develop safety awareness through experiencing disaster situations by seeing, hearing, and feeling them firsthand.” He added, “Through the Life Safety Learning Center, we will ensure that residents can wisely respond to any disaster situation.”
