KMA Holds 'National Contest for Korean Typhoon Names' Currently Used Typhoon Names

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) will hold a national contest to collect Korean typhoon names from June 21 to July 5.

This contest is being held to find a replacement name for the typhoon "Goni," which caused significant damage and hundreds of casualties in the Philippines last year.

Member countries of the Typhoon Committee allow the removal of typhoon names from the list if they have caused extensive damage. At the last general meeting, five typhoon names were decided to be deleted: Linfa, Molave, Bongpong, Goni, and Bavi.

The KMA announced that three candidate typhoon names will be selected through the contest and finalized at the "54th Typhoon Committee General Meeting" held at the end of February 2022. In previous national contests, "Mirinae" and "Doksuri" were finalized as typhoon names.

There are a total of 20 typhoon names in Korean registered with the Typhoon Committee. North Korea is also included in the Typhoon Committee. To avoid association with specific regions or organizations, South Korea mainly uses names of plants and animals for typhoons.

Typhoon name submissions can be made through the KMA website. The KMA plans to select five final names and submit three of them to the Typhoon Committee. The finalized names will be used starting in 2022.

KMA Administrator Park Kwang-seok said, "This typhoon name contest will raise awareness about typhoons and create a consensus that 'typhoon names are made directly by the people.' We will continue to expand communication with the public and do our best to ensure that weather information is effectively delivered."
