[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Dong-gu, Gwangju (Mayor Im Taek) has contributed to the development of the font ‘Tusae Saebo-che’ based on the handwriting of the martyr Park Yongjun, who engraved letters on the ‘Tusae Saebo,’ which represented the voices of Gwangju citizens in May 1980.
According to Dong-gu on the 18th, Martyr Park grew up at ‘Mudeung Childcare Center’ located in Hak-dong, Dong-gu, and after graduating from high school, he worked at the YWCA Credit Union located in Dong-gu.
During the May 18 Democratic Uprising, he participated in producing leaflets that revealed the realities of Gwangju alongside martyr Yoon Sangwon, and the leaflets published in this way were the ‘Tusae Saebo,’ which informed the public about the dark times in Gwangju.
Park, who informed Gwangju citizens about Gwangju and the military’s atrocities through writing, was shot and killed by martial law troops on the early morning of May 27, 1980, on the second floor of the YWCA behind the Jeonil Building. His life is also included in ‘Figures of Dong-gu 2,’ recently published by Dong-gu.
The ‘Park Yongjun Tusae Saebo Font’ was produced and promoted by the Regional Public Policy Platform ‘Gwangjuro,’ Gwangju YWCA, and the Firefly Martyrs Memorial Association, with Dong-gu participating in the font development.
The district posted the font on the Dong-gu website so that anyone can download it directly, and plans to actively use the ‘Park Yongjun Tusae Saebo Font’ in various district newsletters, promotional materials, and records issued to residents in the future.
Mayor Im Taek of Dong-gu said, “I hope this will serve as an opportunity to remember the Tusae Saebo, which represented the voice of Gwangju amidst the many media outlets that remained silent about the military’s atrocities during May 18,” and added, “We plan to use the Tusae Saebo Font extensively in district publications so that the spirit of martyr Park Yongjun can be appreciated.”
