Yeosu City, Woongcheon National Sports Center Fully Underway

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shim Kyung-taek] Yeosu City in Jeollanam-do is actively advancing the ‘Ungcheon National Sports Center Construction Project,’ which was selected through a Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism public contest in September 2019, to be built on the site of Ungcheon Yi Sun-sin Park.

The project is expected to play a significant role in meeting the increasing demand for sports facilities in the Ungcheon-dong area, where the population is steadily growing, by expanding the insufficient public sports facilities and promoting citizens’ participation in recreational sports.

According to the city, the ‘Ungcheon National Sports Center’ will be constructed on a portion of the Ungcheon Yi Sun-sin Park site with a total project cost of 9 billion KRW, including 4 billion KRW in national funding. The facility will have a total floor area of 3,350㎡, consisting of one basement floor and two above-ground floors. It will include a swimming pool (25m, 5 lanes), a multipurpose gymnasium, outdoor resting areas, and auxiliary facilities.

In particular, in line with the government’s Green New Deal policy, the center is planned to be a zero-energy facility that minimizes energy consumption by utilizing new and renewable energy sources, which is expected to reduce long-term budget costs and enhance the quality of public buildings.

The city plans to complete the detailed design by December of this year, start construction in January next year, and aim for completion by December.

Once the Ungcheon National Sports Center is built, it is expected to become a beloved healing spot for citizens by harmonizing park and cultural and sports facilities in connection with the existing park facilities and tennis courts, along with the ‘Yeosu City Museum,’ which will be built on the Yi Sun-sin Park site.
