Japanese Military 'Comfort Women' Victims Youth Art Contest... Until September 10



[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family is hosting a youth contest on the theme of violence and human rights in conflict situations, including the issue of Japanese military 'comfort women' victims.


On the 17th, the Ministry announced the launch of the '2021 Youth Contest Related to Japanese Military "Comfort Women" Victims.' Eligible participants include elementary, middle, high school, and university students, as well as out-of-school youth under the age of 24. Individuals or teams can participate. Youths wishing to apply can submit their works on the contest website from the 18th until September 10.


The contest is divided into two categories: music/video and art/design, and participants can express the theme in various ways. The contest themes are ▲ Understanding the Japanese military 'comfort women' issue correctly ▲ Stories about the Japanese military 'comfort women' issue to pass on to the next generation ▲ Efforts to not forget the Japanese military 'comfort women' issue ▲ The desired resolution of the Japanese military 'comfort women' issue ▲ Messages of empathy, consolation, support, and hope to the Japanese military 'comfort women' victims.

The music/video category includes performances, singing, children's songs, musicals, dance, music videos, and self-produced content (UCC). The art/design category includes design, hand-drawing, crafts, comics, illustrations, and calligraphy.


Among the submissions, 28 works will be selected to receive awards: the Prime Minister's Award (2 works, 1,000,000 KRW each), the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Award (2 works, 500,000 KRW each), and the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Award (24 works, 500,000 KRW each).


Minister of Gender Equality and Family Jeong Young-ae said, "I hope this contest will provide an opportunity for youth to correctly understand and empathize with the Japanese military 'comfort women' victims and the issue of wartime sexual violence." She added, "We will continue to promote various commemorative projects to restore the honor and dignity of the surviving Japanese military 'comfort women' victims and to spread a correct historical understanding of the issue."
