[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] Yuhan-Kimberly announced on the 17th that it will present the achievements of creating the "Mongol Yuhan-Kimberly Forest," recognized as a successful case of desertification prevention, at the online discussion commemorating the World Day to Combat Desertification hosted by the Korea Forest Service.
For nearly 20 years, Yuhan-Kimberly has been working to prevent desertification by cultivating the Yuhan-Kimberly Forest in Mongolia, one of the sources of yellow dust, covering an area 11 times the size of Yeouido (equivalent to the area of Songpa-gu, Seoul).
The Tojinnars region, where the forest is located, once had dense pine forests to the extent that it was called the "endless pine forest," but desertification accelerated after two fires in the 1990s devastated the area.
Since 2003, Yuhan-Kimberly, together with the civic group "Northeast Asia Forest Forum," has succeeded in restoring the vast area of 3,250 hectares?11 times the size of Yeouido?by planting and nurturing over 10 million trees into a dense forest. They added that this achievement is significant as it reduced the sources of yellow dust that also affect South Korea.
Earlier this year, the "Green Mongolia" campaign, the Mongolian version of "Our Mountains and Rivers, Green and Green," was trademarked domestically following its registration in Mongolia, and is being actively used in consumer campaign activities.
In fact, MSD, Yuhan-Kimberly’s local partner in Mongolia, has been actively communicating with consumers through the "Green Mongolia" campaign, increasing awareness of Yuhan-Kimberly’s export products such as Kleenex, Huggies, Good Feel, and White. As a result, the company explained that Yuhan-Kimberly’s exports to Mongolia increased by about 50% compared to the previous year.
A Yuhan-Kimberly official said, "Based on the know-how gained from the 37-year 'Our Mountains and Rivers, Green and Green' campaign for forest restoration in South Korea, we were able to make a small contribution to preventing desertification in Mongolia." He added, "We feel rewarded by the support and empathy of the Mongolian people for our long-term efforts in planting trees and nurturing forests in Mongolia, where forests are scarce and desertification is a challenge."
