A Drunk 20s Driver on the Highway at Midnight... Caught After Citizen Pursuit

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] A driver in his 20s who was driving under the influence on the highway was caught after being chased by a citizen.

According to Jinju Police Station on the 16th, around 2 a.m. on the 15th near the Dinosaur Land Rest Area on the Daejeon-Tongyeong Expressway in Goseong-gun, Mr. A, who was driving, began to follow a Sonata passenger car ahead that suddenly braked, showing signs of suspected drunk driving.

Mr. A also reported the suspected drunk driving to 112. While occasionally crossing lanes, he maintained a relatively safe distance and pursued the vehicle. He kept communicating with the police, providing real-time updates on the location of the Sonata driver, Mr. B (27). Mr. B tried to shake off Mr. A’s nearly 20 km chase by exiting the highway and entering Jinju city, but eventually stopped in a residential area. When Mr. A confronted him about drinking, Mr. B attempted to flee again, hitting two nearby parked cars, including a BMW, in the process.

The police arrived at the scene shortly after and arrested Mr. B. His blood alcohol concentration at the time was 0.15%, which corresponds to the level for license cancellation. The police are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident, and expressed gratitude to Mr. A for providing accurate movement details, enabling a swift response and arrest.
