[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] On the 16th, Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, responded negatively to Song Young-gil, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea's proposal to establish a 'Minister for Youth Special Affairs,' saying he was "skeptical about what practical roles and functions it would have."
In an interview with Channel A that day, Lee said, "I understand that Leader Song is deeply concerned about the strong aversion of the 2030 generation toward the ruling party."
Regarding why the People Power Party has gained support from the 2030 generation, Lee claimed, "It is because, in the April 7 by-elections, they boldly relinquished vested interests and brought young people into key positions." He added, "Rather than creating organizations and establishing new positions, we need to open channels where the younger generation can speak freely and vacate seats for them. (The Democratic Party) seems to be going in a different direction."
Lee said, "I appreciate Leader Song's recognition of the problem and his efforts to resolve it, but I have doubts about whether the method is appropriate," adding, "If there is a meeting between the leaders of the ruling and opposition parties, there will be an opportunity to convey this to Leader Song."
