[Haenam=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] Jeonnam Haenam-gun (Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan) announced on the 15th that it released 2 million shrimp seeds into the sea at Jing-ui-ri, Hwangsan-myeon to restore coastal fishery resources and increase fishermen's income.
The released shrimp seeds were supplied free of charge from the Resource Development Research Institute of the Jeollanam-do Marine Fisheries Science Institute (Shinan Jido) and were hatched from wild mother shrimp and raised to an intermediate size of over 1.2 cm.
The Hwangsan Jing-ui sea area is a major production area of wild shrimp and has played a significant role in improving fishermen's income, but recently, catches have been declining due to abnormal temperatures. It is expected that releasing high value-added shrimp seeds will greatly help in the creation of coastal fishery resources.
Haenam-gun has been promoting a fishery resource development project that releases healthy fishery seeds from March to November to expand fishery resources and increase fishermen's income.
This year, seven marine species and two freshwater species were selected, including Manila clams, blue crabs, shrimp, mantis shrimp, sea cucumbers, abalone, red rockfish, eel, and soft-shelled turtle, which are suitable for regional characteristics and directly linked to fishermen's and residents' income.
With a project budget of 482.5 million KRW targeting 53 fishing villages and other locations, it plans to release 32 tons of Manila clams and 5,354,000 seeds of eight other species including shrimp.
Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan stated, “We will continue to carry out resource release projects to develop fishery resources and increase fishermen's income, leading to the creation of a stable fishery environment.”
