[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Namdong-gu, Incheon is establishing a 'Smart Sewer Monitoring System' to promptly respond to flood damage caused by heavy rain.
To this end, the district recently announced on the 15th that it signed a business agreement with the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute (KEITI) under the Ministry of Environment and Korea Convergence IT Co., Ltd.
This system is a public-private collaborative project promoted as part of KEITI's '2021 Commercialization Project for Environmental Equipment by Small and Medium Environmental Enterprises,' and it is the first case in Incheon.
The targets are six locations around Ganseok Station, a frequent flood area, and 17 sewage pipes and manholes in Nonhyeon 2 Taekji area of Nonhyeon-dong, where there is concern about cross-connections due to incorrect connections between stormwater and sewage pipes.
According to the agreement, KEITI will invest 546 million KRW in government subsidies, and Korea Convergence IT will install and operate monitoring devices such as water level, flow rate, and video sensors inside road manholes.
Namdong-gu will monitor this information in real time to identify the possibility of flooding in advance and take appropriate measures accordingly.
The three organizations will conduct on-site surveys of the target areas by next month, complete the installation of the monitoring system in August, and begin full operation.
Once the system is operational, it is expected to prevent repeated flood damage during the rainy season in advance and minimize unexpected human and property damage.
Lee Kang-ho, Mayor of Namdong-gu, said, "Through the Smart Sewer Monitoring System, we will not only prevent flood damage but also achieve significant cost savings in the maintenance and management of sewer facilities."
