Condemning Dokdo Marking on Tokyo Olympic Map, Korean Peninsula Flag Raising Ceremony Held at National Garden East Gate Plaza
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 14th that it held a Korean Peninsula flag raising ceremony to protect Dokdo at the East Gate Square of Suncheonman National Garden with heads of public and related organizations of Suncheon City.
The Korean Peninsula flag raising event was organized to emphasize our sovereignty over Dokdo and express the will to protect Dokdo, reflecting Suncheon City's policy of raising the Korean Peninsula flag at city hall and its affiliated institutions, amid public outrage over Japan marking Dokdo as its territory on the Tokyo Olympic map.
At the raising ceremony, about 20 heads of public and related organizations, including Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon City, Chairman Heo Yu-in of Suncheon City Council, Tax Office Chief Lee Seung-rae, and Fire Station Chief Ha Soo-cheol, attended and raised the Korean Peninsula flag with Dokdo marked on it to express their commitment to protecting Dokdo. They urged the immediate removal of Dokdo from the Tokyo Olympic map and condemned Japan for damaging the Olympic spirit and engaging in political historical distortion.
Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon City said, "At the Olympics, which advocate world peace and harmony, Japan is asserting sovereignty over Dokdo, our inherent territory, and revealing its ambitions over Dokdo by using the Olympics," adding, "We will join forces with citizens to do what we can at the local government level to protect our land, Dokdo."
Meanwhile, since 2019, the city has raised the Korean Peninsula flag at city hall to mark the 74th anniversary of Liberation Day, the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean Provisional Government, and the 70th anniversary of city promotion, to spread a mood of peace and reconciliation between North and South Korea and lay the foundation for peaceful unification. Currently, the Korean Peninsula flag is raised at affiliated business offices, eup/myeon/dong administrative welfare centers, and village halls.
