[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] LG Electronics is joining forces with the Korea Energy Agency to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
On the 14th, LG Electronics and the Korea Energy Agency signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the Suwon Convention Center in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency for SMEs. The signing ceremony was attended by Kim Chang-seop, Chairman of the Korea Energy Agency, and Yoon Dae-sik, Executive Vice President in charge of External Cooperation at LG Electronics, among others.
The purpose of this agreement is to support SMEs through energy diagnosis, consulting, and replacement of outdated facilities. Both parties will assess the current energy usage status at SME workplaces and propose optimal solutions for efficient energy use. LG Electronics will assist SMEs by covering the costs required to replace outdated equipment with high-efficiency facilities, helping to reduce energy consumption.
Through this, SMEs can minimize greenhouse gas emissions by improving energy use efficiency via consulting and facility upgrades. LG Electronics plans to support the trading of carbon emission rights for the greenhouse gases reduced by SMEs.
LG Electronics expects that this agreement will not only create a win-win ecosystem with SMEs but also help SMEs enhance their business competitiveness by lowering energy costs.
Previously, LG Electronics declared its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. The company plans to reduce carbon emissions generated during the product manufacturing stage by 50% compared to 2017 levels, while realizing carbon neutrality through carbon emission rights obtained by reducing carbon externally. Carbon neutrality means offsetting carbon emissions by reducing carbon externally, such as through renewable energy generation.
Yoon Dae-sik, Executive Vice President in charge of External Cooperation at LG Electronics, emphasized, "We hope to help SMEs improve energy use efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions," adding, "We will continue our efforts to contribute to carbon neutrality through greenhouse gas reduction."
