Ministry of the Interior and Safety Promotes Public Participation in Carbon Neutrality... Collaboration with the Carbon Neutrality Committee

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The government is promoting public participation to build national consensus on achieving '2050 Carbon Neutrality' and to discover citizens' policy ideas.

On the 14th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that on the 15th, it will hold the '2nd Government Innovation Promotion Council of 2021' online in a non-face-to-face format to discuss government innovation tasks, including measures to activate public participation for achieving carbon neutrality. Launched in November last year, the 2nd Government Innovation Promotion Council is a pan-government public-private innovation consultative body composed of private members with extensive field experience such as companies, civic groups, and academia, as well as government members including vice ministers from government innovation-related ministries, deputy heads of local governments, representatives from public institutions, and local public enterprises.

This plenary meeting of the council will be held online due to the COVID-19 situation and will discuss measures to activate public participation for achieving carbon neutrality, the current status of policy proposals from citizens, and the progress of representative innovation tasks of the council. First, the council will present a plan for a 'nationwide simultaneous public proposal discovery event' that links policy proposal platforms of central ministries and local governments to establish diverse policy ideas from the public related to carbon neutrality.

In the thematic discussion, Yoon Tae-beom, head of the National Task Support Group at the current Policy Planning Committee, will present on the achievements of government innovation under the Moon Jae-in administration and future promotion strategies. The discussion will focus on ways to materialize future government innovation achievements to create tangible changes that citizens can feel.

Joo Hyung-chul, co-chairman of the Government Innovation Promotion Council, said, "Carbon neutrality is a challenging task that requires practice and cooperation from administrative and public institutions, private companies, and citizens in their daily lives. We expect the Government Innovation Promotion Council to closely cooperate with the Carbon Neutrality Committee to create synergy for realizing carbon neutrality led by the public."

Lee Jae-young, vice minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, stated, "Looking back on the past four years of government innovation, the Government Innovation Promotion Council, which involves both public and private sectors based on citizens' participation, has played an important role in producing innovation outcomes in citizens' daily lives. We hope the council will continue to serve as a strong supporter in promoting government innovation."
