Lee Jun-seok·Yoon Seok-yeol Effect
Chu Mi-ae·Park Yong-jin Rising
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Former Minister of Justice Chu Mi-ae, known as the "Yoon Seok-yeol sniper," and Park Yong-jin, a "1970s-born" member of the Democratic Party, have surpassed former Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun to rank 3rd and 4th among the Democratic Party's presidential candidates. The previous "Big 3" lineup of Democratic presidential candidates?Lee Jae-myung, Lee Nak-yon, and Chung Sye-kyun?has begun to break apart.
According to a public opinion poll conducted by Asia Economy through Win-G Korea Consulting from the 12th to 13th, surveying 1,017 voters aged 18 and older nationwide (100% mobile phone virtual numbers, automated response), Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung recorded 35.4% as the most suitable Democratic presidential candidate, followed by former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yon (14.6%), former Minister Chu Mi-ae (6.7%), and Representative Park Yong-jin (6.3%).
Next were former Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun (5.5%), former Deputy Prime Minister Kim Dong-yeon (3.2%), Representative Lee Kwang-jae (2.5%), Gangwon Province Governor Choi Moon-soon (1.6%), Representative Kim Doo-kwan (1.5%), and Chungnam Province Governor Yang Seung-jo (1.2%). Other figures (1.4%), no preference (16%), and unsure (4%) were also recorded.
The "surprise overtaking" by former Minister Chu and Representative Park is interpreted as an effect of the recent "Lee Jun-seok and Yoon Seok-yeol phenomenon" sweeping the opposition camp.
In the case of former Minister Chu, her approval rating appears to have risen in tandem with former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol ending his hiatus and beginning active political activities. During her tenure as minister, Chu clashed with Yoon over prosecutorial investigations and personnel issues. If she runs, she is expected to focus on sending a message to check Yoon.
Representative Park, born in 1971, is also seen as benefiting from the "Lee Jun-seok butterfly effect." Among the currently mentioned Democratic presidential candidates, Park is the youngest. The expectations for "young leadership" triggered by the election of Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, seem to have been reflected in Park, who has called for a "political generational change."
This survey was conducted by Asia Economy through Win-G Korea Consulting from the 12th to 13th, targeting voters aged 18 and older nationwide. A total of 1,017 people responded, with an overall response rate of 10.9%. The survey method was wireless ARS using 100% mobile phone virtual numbers, and the sample was extracted with weighted values by gender, age, and region based on the resident registration population as of the end of January 2021 from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (cell weighting). The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
