Two soldiers who engaged in homosexual acts during quarantine due to concerns over the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) received a suspended sentence of six months in prison.

The soldiers claimed innocence, stating it was a "consensual relationship," but the military court drew a line, saying it "negatively affected military discipline."

According to Money Today on the 12th, in March, two soldiers belonging to an Army unit engaged in sexual acts in a cohort quarantine dormitory (hospital room) of a frontline corps.

Last December, in a hospital room where several soldiers camped collectively, one soldier entered another soldier's tent and engaged in such acts.

Active-duty soldiers engaging in homosexual acts are subject to punishment. Article 92, Paragraph 6 of the Military Criminal Act stipulates that anyone who commits 'anal intercourse' or other molestation shall be punished by imprisonment for up to two years.

The soldiers' lawyer argued, "If the sexual act was consensual, it should be not guilty," but the court viewed it as an act that seriously infringes on the sound living of the community.

The court stated, "The acts of the two soldiers cause disgust among the general public and violate good sexual morals," adding, "Considering that it occurred during self-quarantine to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the culpability cannot be considered light."

However, the court explained the sentencing by considering "that the two soldiers were first-time offenders and showed remorse and confessed."

Meanwhile, in June last year, it was confirmed that a soldier belonging to an Air Force unit in the Gyeongnam region, who posted photos of homosexual acts while wearing a military uniform on Twitter, was an active-duty soldier. This Twitter account had about 5,100 followers.
