[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] The so-called 'Doge' meme attracted attention after being auctioned as an NFT (Non-Fungible Token) for approximately 4.5 billion KRW.
On the 11th (local time), NBC in the United States reported that the 'Doge meme' was sold on the online auction site Zora for 1,696.9 Ethereum (approximately 4 million USD, about 4.5 billion KRW). This is the highest sale price ever recorded for NFTs related to online parody photos, videos, and other creative works.
The person who put this NFT up for auction is Atsuko Sato, the original creator of the Doge meme and the owner of the Shiba Inu 'Kabosu' featured in the Doge meme. In 2010, Sato posted photos of her pet dog Kabosu on her personal blog. These photos quickly spread across websites such as Tumblr and Reddit, giving rise to the 'Doge meme.'
The online meme database 'Know Your Meme' has described Doge as "the most iconic meme in history." Recently, Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that gained significant attention after Tesla CEO Elon Musk publicly expressed support, also emerged riding on the popularity of this 'Doge meme.'
Sato is reported to have personally participated in the bidding for this auction, and from this day forward, bidding will also be conducted for seven other photos of Kabosu featuring NFT technology. Additionally, Zora announced that a portion of the auction proceeds will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society and the World Food Programme.
Meanwhile, NFTs are tokens utilizing blockchain technology that assign unique identification values to each piece of content. Unlike typical cryptocurrencies, each token has a completely distinct value, making replication impossible. Due to these characteristics, NFTs are especially frequently used to guarantee the authenticity of various digital content.
