[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The identity of Kim Young-jun (29), the suspect in the so-called "Second n-room" case who disguised himself as a woman to make video calls and recorded and distributed nude videos of over 1,300 men, was revealed on the 9th.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Cyber Investigation Division arrested and detained Kim Young-jun on charges including violations of the Child and Youth Sexual Protection Act, Sexual Violence Punishment Act, and Child Welfare Act, and disclosed his personal information such as age and name. Kim Young-jun's current appearance is expected to be revealed to the media when he is transferred to the prosecution on the morning of the 11th of this month.
After holding a personal information disclosure committee meeting on the afternoon of the same day, the police explained the reason for disclosure, stating, "The case is serious as it involves the production and distribution of sexual exploitation materials of 39 male children and adolescents," and "an arrest warrant was issued, sufficient personal and material evidence was secured, and the suspect is considered to have a high risk of reoffending."
Kim Young-jun is suspected of making video calls with over 1,300 men from November 2013 until recently, recording the victims' obscene acts, and distributing the videos. The police seized about 27,000 videos (5.55 terabytes) filmed by Kim Young-jun and three original storage devices.
Investigations revealed that Kim Young-jun posted photos of women on chat apps, contacted men through these posts, disguised himself as a woman using voice modulation programs during video calls, recorded the calls, and distributed and sold the videos via Telegram and other platforms. He also lured seven children and adolescents to his residence and motels, induced them to engage in similar sexual acts, and recorded these acts.
The police began investigating in April this year following victim reports, identified Kim Young-jun through victim interviews and multiple searches of chat apps, and arrested him at his residence on the 3rd of this month. Notably, he possessed about 45,000 obscene videos (120 gigabytes) of women used to lure men, among which illegal recordings were also confirmed, the police explained.
The police plan to confiscate and destroy the original media containing the victim videos in Kim Young-jun's possession, upload the illegal videos to the illegal filming tracking system to check for internet distribution records, and delete and block them. They also intend to continue investigating suspects who redistributed Kim Young-jun's videos and the buyers.
A police official emphasized, "This case confirmed that digital sex crimes can be widely committed against men as well," and added, "We will do our best to completely eradicate digital sex crimes through diversified international cooperation and the development of tracking investigation techniques."
The police also warned, "Be cautious of approaches using meetings with anonymous individuals met through chat apps as bait, and especially exercise great caution with video calls involving unidentified persons, as they are likely to lead to similar crimes," urging, "If you suffer harm such as threats using recorded videos after video calls, please report promptly."
Meanwhile, this case was posted on the Blue House National Petition Board under the title "We demand thorough investigation, punishment, and disclosure of personal information of those involved in the illegal filming and distribution of nude videos, the second N-room case," and received over 220,000 endorsements.
