Employees at GS Caltex's Daejeon Technology Research Center are conducting research and development work on eco-friendly products.
GS Caltex is continuously developing a sustainable management system based on fulfilling social responsibilities while managing various issues such as economic, social, and environmental factors to secure sustainable growth amid the rapidly changing global business environment.
This year, CEO (President) Heo Se-hong emphasized in his New Year's address that "ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, the new standard for sustainable management, is accelerating," adding, "Since eco-friendliness, social responsibility, and transparency in governance have become essential conditions for a company's sustainable growth, the company must further advance eco-friendly management as a corporate citizen, fulfill social responsibilities in harmony with customers, and strengthen transparency in corporate management." He also urged, "We must create a year that achieves tangible progress and results in clear goal-setting for ESG and new eco-friendly businesses."
As the need for ESG level evaluation and management has increased, GS Caltex selected ESG improvement tasks in 2017. Based on this, since 2018, the company has been systematically promoting human rights management, enhancing ESG among partners, complying with tax obligations, and strengthening safety, health, environment, and quality activities to establish an ESG management system. This year, the existing CSR Committee was expanded and reorganized into the ESG Committee to establish a CEO-centered decision-making system related to eco-friendly issues such as climate change response and reduction of air pollutant emissions.
In particular, the petroleum industry requires strict energy and environmental management activities because it uses a large amount of energy to produce products. Accordingly, GS Caltex monitors greenhouse gas emissions during product production and distribution processes and proactively manages the impact of greenhouse gases generated during new projects and process improvements.
GS Caltex has also actively started selling eco-friendly products using natural raw materials. The sales volume of the eco-friendly product 2,3-butanediol increased more than tenfold compared to the previous year. The production volume of eco-friendly composite resin made from recycled plastic materials exceeded 10% of the total production volume.
