STX Group (STX Co., Ltd., STX Marine Service, PK Valve) announced on the 8th that it signed an industry-academia cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sogang University, aiming to jointly establish an affiliated research institute within Sogang University and develop technologies to secure future growth engines.
The signing ceremony held at Sogang University was attended by STX Co., Ltd. and STX Marine Service CEO Park Sang-jun, Executive Director Oh Dong-hwan, PK Valve CEO Jeon Young-chan, and Sogang University President Shim Jong-hyuk, Vice President for Academic Affairs Song Tae-kyung, Vice President for External Affairs Kim Soon-gi, and Director of Industry-Academia Cooperation Jung Hyun-sik, who pledged mutual technology exchange and cooperation for the joint development of both institutions.
Through this agreement, the two institutions will mutually cooperate in the commercialization and business application of advanced technologies, including △Energy Management System for the power industry applying AI-based Smart Grid and Energy Storage System (ESS) △Next-generation security systems utilizing Radar technology △Intelligent valves using big data △Development of valves and equipment technology for hydrogen applications.
In particular, STX Group plans to focus on research and development of ‘Smart Grid’ technology that can optimize power production by real-time monitoring of power usage information based on AI and information and communication technology (ICT), and next-generation power grid ‘Energy Storage System’ technology that can supply stored energy as needed, in collaboration with Professor Kim Hong-seok of the Department of Electronic Engineering at Sogang University, a leader in the energy ICT convergence field, and his research team. This will be integrated with STX Marine Service’s diesel and renewable energy power plant operation and management (O&M) technology to further expand business.
Additionally, with Professor Kim Young-rok and his research team from the Department of Electronic Engineering at Sogang University, STX Group plans to advance land and maritime radar signal processing technology to develop and secure cutting-edge security surveillance systems. PK Valve, which possesses the best valve technology in Korea, will share accumulated valve-related big data with Sogang University researchers to develop smart valve technology capable of stable flow control and predictive maintenance of component failures based on this data, which will be introduced to the market.
To facilitate smooth progress of these joint researches, both institutions are promoting △joint establishment and operation of corporate-affiliated research institutes △exchange of information and knowledge necessary for research and development activities △strengthening educational curricula and regular invitation seminars to enhance researchers’ capabilities.
At the signing ceremony, STX CEO Park Sang-jun stated, “In the changing global industrial paradigm, securing future technologies for creating new added value has become a key factor determining the group’s future,” adding, “We will closely cooperate with Sogang University’s excellent research personnel to achieve technology-based growth for STX Group and support remarkable academic achievements in individual research fields.”
Sogang University President Shim Jong-hyuk said, “Through this agreement, we expect more active joint technology development, establishment of corporate-affiliated research institutes, and exchanges of researchers and students necessary for high value-added future leading businesses, and the university will provide full support,” adding, “Above all, I hope the results of this industry-academia cooperation will help strengthen STX Group’s technological competitiveness and enable it to grow into a top company, and that it will remain a model case of industry-academia-research cooperation showcasing Sogang University’s excellent research capabilities.”
