[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] As the COVID-19 pandemic confined daily activities indoors, a new term "wasik lifestyle" emerged, referring to the increasing number of people spending time in bed. With the frequency of bed use rising, many are concerned about the impact on mattress lifespan.

The typical lifespan of a spring mattress is known to be 7 years, while natural latex and high-density memory foam mattresses last about 10 years. However, factors such as heat and humidity can shorten mattress life, so it is important to regularly check the condition of your bed. Sleep specialist brand Project Sleep revealed on the 8th how to identify mattresses that have reached the end of their lifespan.

Sagging or Noisy Mattresses

If you use a spring mattress, check for any springs protruding or excessive noise. Even if no visible deformation is present, frequent creaking sounds may indicate spring damage. For latex and memory foam mattresses, check for sagging.

If there is deformation or sagging, the internal materials may not properly distribute body pressure, potentially causing pain in the back and waist. Protruding parts exert strong pressure on the body, while sunken areas fail to support body weight adequately, leading to muscle tension.

One way to alleviate sagging and noise is to place a topper on the mattress. Project Sleep’s soft topper is 7 cm thick, designed to provide optimal comfort on both the floor and bed. Its customized transition foam responds to movements during sleep, gently supporting the body and allowing even old beds to feel like new.

Mattresses with Hardening Phenomenon

Pay close attention to hardening, which mainly occurs in latex mattresses and involves the internal material becoming hard and powdery. Latex is vulnerable to heat and humidity, often hardening after using heating devices in winter or sweating heavily in summer. Hardening can also be caused by simple aging.

Users of spring or memory foam mattresses may overlook hardening. However, hybrid mattresses combining latex on springs or memory foam and latex are now common, so it is important to check whether the product is made of a single material.

Project Sleep mattresses use high-density memory foam (50 kg/m³) that guarantees durability for at least 5 years and do not experience hardening. They are also free from harmful substances such as formaldehyde and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), holding international safety certifications CertiPUR-US and KC safety certification, ensuring safe use.

Moldy Mattresses

Mold is another major factor that shortens mattress lifespan. Summer, when sweating is heavy, provides the three essential conditions for mold growth: temperature, humidity, and nutrients. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly wash covers and check for mold inside the mattress.

Once mold appears, it is difficult to treat, so maintaining mattress hygiene regularly is crucial. Using waterproof products that prevent moisture or contaminants from penetrating the mattress is also an effective method.

Project Sleep’s waterproof covers and pads apply TPU laminate waterproof film, commonly used in surgical waterproof bandages. Unlike other products that only coat the surface and repel moisture temporarily before absorbing it again, this material offers strong waterproofing that blocks sweat and various contaminants at the source.

A Project Sleep representative said, "Most mattresses can be used comfortably for over 10 years if properly maintained," adding, "We hope people thoroughly manage their mattresses in advance to avoid overusing expired mattresses and protect their sleep health."
