[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) will hold the "2021 Dano Hanmadang" on the 12th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Open Yard of Gangdong-gu Office (Seongnae-dong 25) to celebrate Dano.
Since ancient times, "Dano" has been a day to ward off evil spirits and pray for a bountiful year. This event was prepared to comfort residents exhausted by COVID-19 and to express hopes for overcoming the pandemic.
This event features various traditional experiences such as planting iris, making Dano fans, making iris soap, and making surichit rice cakes, which are representative customs of Dano. In addition, there will be diverse performances including a gayageum duo and magic shows that people of all ages can enjoy together.
Also, in the play area, traditional games such as yutnori, tuho, and ttangttameokgi will be set up along with a box playground for fun play. There will also be booths selling eco-friendly agricultural products from the local area at affordable prices and urban agriculture goods.
This event is highly meaningful as it is directly participated in and led by urban agriculture activists, urban farmers, and local residents active in the district, including the Cooperative Urban Nongdam, Gangdong Native Keepers, Cooperative Social Dining Farm, Cooperative Gangdong Herbal School, Gangdong Gardeners Club, and Urban Garden Press Corps.
Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, "Through this Dano Hanmadang event, I hope it will be a source of strength to overcome COVID-19 by reflecting on the meaning of traditional seasonal customs of our country and through rest and encouragement." He added, "The district will continue to strive to enhance the cultural function of urban agriculture through the harmony of urban agriculture and traditional culture."
The 2021 Dano Hanmadang will operate under COVID-19 prevention guidelines by establishing a quarantine countermeasure headquarters and limiting the number of people inside the venue to fewer than 100.
