[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol paid a visit to the National Cemetery in Dongjak-gu, Seoul on the 5th.
On that day, Yoon laid flowers and paid respects at the underground Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Memorial Tablet Enshrinement Room of the Chung Hon Tower, and after the visit, he met with the families of those who died in the Vietnam War and anti-espionage operations to offer consolation.
This was Yoon's first political activity in nearly two months since the early voting for the April 7 by-elections. Given that the visit took place a day before Memorial Day, there are speculations that his declaration to run for the presidency is imminent. The National Cemetery is also the first place politicians visit when starting their terms.
On that day, Yoon wrote in the guestbook, "I will create a country where those who sacrificed for the nation do not feel anger." When he visited the National Cemetery as Prosecutor General on January 4, he wrote, "I will uphold the will of the ancestors who devoted themselves to the nation and build a righteous prosecution service." Compared to that, the phrase "create a country" reveals his intention to run for the presidency.
However, it is reported that Yoon did not make any particular remarks about his actions that day to those around him. In political circles, there were expectations that after the People Power Party leadership is elected, Yoon would join as a regular member and participate in the presidential primary, but the official stance was "nothing has been decided."
