Hyundai Glovis, First Global Shipping Company to Establish 'Electric Vehicle Specialized Maritime Transport Solution'

Hyundai Glovis, First Global Shipping Company to Establish 'Electric Vehicle Specialized Maritime Transport Solution' Hyundai Glovis' Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC).

[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Hyundai Glovis announced on the 2nd that it has established the world's first electric vehicle (EV)-specialized maritime transportation solution in the global car carrier market. The plan is to respond to the rapidly expanding global EV market through the loading, transportation, and unloading of vehicles applying the EV maritime transportation manual.

According to the loading guide established by Hyundai Glovis, the loading reservation form marks electric vehicles with the notation ‘EV’ to distinguish them from internal combustion engine vehicles for customized management. Information such as the battery charge level and shipper’s requirements, including brief vehicle details, are shared in advance through an internal computer program. Loaded vehicles are regularly monitored for battery charge status and exterior condition to maintain transportation quality.

Hyundai Glovis provides temperature and humidity information of the EV loading deck and analyzes battery consumption during maritime transportation to supply shippers with necessary data for establishing battery full charge rate guidelines before loading EVs.

A manual for accident prevention and emergency response has been prepared, and quarterly training is mandated at least once per quarter.

To enhance service sophistication, Hyundai Glovis signed a business agreement with the Korean Register (KR) for joint research and development of an ‘EV Maritime Transportation Safety Handling Guide.’ The established safety manual will be applied not only to current operating vessels but also to future newbuild ships. The Korean Register is one of the world’s top seven classification societies authorized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, conducting ship inspections, certifications, and various technology developments.

Hyundai Glovis is determined to target both global automakers and emerging EV brands by securing safety in the EV transportation process. In particular, it plans to provide one-stop logistics services connecting terminals, land, and sea for emerging EV companies lacking logistics operation experience.

Its fleet of about 90 vessels and a global network of over 80 locations are also advantages. Last year, it transported approximately 180,000 EVs, accounting for around 40% of the global EV maritime transportation volume.

Hyundai Glovis stated that the need for proactive response has increased as the paradigm shift in the automotive industry from internal combustion engines to eco-friendly vehicles accelerates, leading to the establishment of EV-customized transportation solutions.

With major countries such as the UK, China, and France considering halting internal combustion engine vehicle production between 2030 and 2040, EV sales are expected to grow at an average annual rate of 29% over the next decade, reaching 11.2 million units in 2025 and 31.1 million units in 2030.

A Hyundai Glovis official said, "Based on the EV-specialized transportation manual, we will provide excellent services to shippers and increase our EV transportation performance," adding, "We will strive to demonstrate shipping competitiveness that leads the global market."
