After the Second Trial Verdict, "Cannot Understand the Sentence Reduction"
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Seung-gon, PD Yoon Jin-geun] As the second trial sentencing for Jo Joo-bin and his group, who operated the Telegram ‘Nth Room’ and committed various digital sex crimes, was delivered, citizens raised their voices saying, “He should receive a heavier sentence.”
On the afternoon of the 1st, Jo Joo-bin was sentenced to 42 years in prison by the 9th Criminal Division of the Seoul High Court (Chief Judge Moon Kwang-seop), which handled the second trial. Previously, he had been sentenced to 45 years in prison in the first trial for charges including producing and distributing sexual exploitation materials of minors.
Citizens strongly criticized the sentence given to Jo Joo-bin in the second trial. Citizen A, met at Cheonggyecheon in Seoul, said, “I thought the 45-year sentence in the first trial was a slap on the wrist, a show punishment,” adding, “Even if he serves the full 45 years and is released, there is no guarantee he won’t commit the same crime again.” He continued, “The standards for punishing sex crimes need to be reset,” and said, “It is regrettable that the sentence was reduced.”
Citizen B said about the trial result, “There are parts I don’t understand,” and asked, “Please reconsider the sentence (for Jo Joo-bin) so that the country can be a safe place for its people.” When asked, “If you could decide the sentence yourself, what would you want to do?” B replied, “If it were up to my heart, I would impose life imprisonment or even harsher punishment,” and added, “I hope they give him a harsher sentence.”
Citizen C said, “I thought the sentence in the first trial was low, but I don’t understand why it was reduced further in the second trial,” pointing out, “If the sentence is too light, there is a risk of recidivism.” He added, “Even if he is released, he will commit (sex crimes) again,” and said, “Life imprisonment should be imposed.”
Citizen D said, “Sex crimes on the internet seem to raise less public awareness than various actual sex crimes,” and criticized, “It seems that Korea’s legal system still does not adequately reflect current social realities.” When asked, “How long do you think Jo Joo-bin should serve?” he said, “Life imprisonment is necessary,” and criticized, “He is at an age where he can serve the full sentence and be released, and I think there is a very high possibility he will commit the same crimes again after release.”
