[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] A man in his 50s who chased and assaulted a woman walking in an apartment complex after saying "Ajumma is glamorous" was sentenced to probation.
On the 29th, according to the legal community, Judge Yoo Donggyun of the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 13 sentenced Park Mo (53), who was indicted on assault charges, to 5 months in prison with a 1-year probation and ordered probation supervision.
Earlier, around 4 a.m. on July 1 last year, Park was brought to trial on charges of indiscriminately assaulting A (43, female), who was walking on a road inside an apartment complex in Gwanak-gu, Seoul.
At the time, he looked down at A from the apartment hallway and said, "Ajumma is glamorous," then went down to the building and approached her. When A, frightened, said she would report to the police and tried to run away, he got angry, chased her, and assaulted her, according to the investigation.
The court pointed out, "The defendant's crime is quite dangerous in its form and has a bad nature," and "The physical and mental suffering the victim endured also appears to be significant."
However, it was taken into consideration that the defendant was a patient with schizophrenia and was in a state of diminished mental capacity. The court stated, "The defendant has reflected on his wrongdoing during more than a month of detention and is determined not to commit such mistakes again," and "Considering that he has no prior convictions exceeding fines, as well as his health condition, age, character, environment, the motive, means, and results of this crime, and circumstances after the crime, all sentencing factors were taken into account."
