Selection of Indong Architecture Office for the Design of Gamcho Village Community Center in Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) has selected "Let's Go Together," submitted by Indong Architects and one other firm, as the final winning design in the design competition for the "Jegi-dong Gamcho Village Community Center Project."

This design competition, conducted as part of the "Jegi-dong Gamcho Village Urban Regeneration New Deal Project," aims to build a community center on Jegi-dong 133-17 with a total project cost of 8.486 billion KRW. The facility will have a total floor area of 993㎡ and five above-ground floors, housing a public library, village cafe, senior welfare facilities, urban regeneration field support center, and multipurpose rooms.

The winning design was praised by the judges for its excellent openness, clear separation of pedestrian and vehicle pathways, and convenient parking layout.

Additionally, the plan incorporated a park inside the building to ensure connectivity, allowing not only building users but also outsiders to naturally enjoy the park, which earned high marks.

The district office will publish the design competition results on the Dongdaemun-gu official website, proceed with the design service, start construction in November, and complete the project by June next year.

The "Jegi-dong Gamcho Village Urban Regeneration New Deal Project" began with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's selection of the urban regeneration New Deal project area in August 2018 and is scheduled to continue until 2021. Covering an area of 49,800㎡ around Jegi-dong 67, the project involves a total budget of 12.5 billion KRW to carry out the creation of the community center, housing improvement support, installation of pedestrian, crime, and fire safety facilities, and community revitalization.

Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, "Through this competition, by constructing an efficient and excellent design community center, we can resolve the inconvenience caused by the lack of meeting and activity spaces for residents." He added, "We expect the community center to greatly contribute to invigorating the village by enabling residents to communicate more actively and carry out various activities."
