Mapo-gu to Operate 10 'Neighborhood Learning Centers Within One Step' This Year... Including Korean Medicine and Leather Craftsmanship Activity Scenes at Haeoreum Neighborhood Learning Center

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) announced that it has been operating the ‘2021 Neighborhood Learning Centers Within One Step’ project since May this year, following last year.

The Neighborhood Learning Centers project, supported by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, utilizes idle spaces within the community as learning spaces to provide customized lifelong learning for local residents.

This is a community-based, neighborhood-level project that allows any resident to easily and conveniently participate in learning, enabling residents to enjoy high-quality lifelong learning benefits in learning spaces closer to them.

The district operates a total of 10 Neighborhood Learning Centers, including the seven existing centers: Dohwa Neighborhood Learning Center, Haeoreum Neighborhood Learning Center, Seogang Neighborhood Learning Center, Youth Naru Neighborhood Learning Center, Mangwon Neighborhood Learning Center, Seongsan Neighborhood Learning Center, and Sangam Neighborhood Learning Center. This year, three additional centers have been designated: ‘Bikke Art’ Neighborhood Learning Center (Seongsan 1-dong Bikke Art), ‘Yeonnam’ Neighborhood Learning Center (Yeonnam-dong Cl? de R?ve), and ‘Seogyo’ Neighborhood Learning Center (Seogyo-dong Community Education Center).

A total of 55 programs, including literacy education, environment, crafts, and local problem-solving, are provided until November for residents such as office workers, women with career interruptions, youth, and adolescents. All programs are conducted safely in compliance with COVID-19 response operation manuals (Infectious Disease Prevention Guidelines by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency), including visitor temperature checks and self-assessment of suspicious symptoms.

All courses are free of charge, but material costs may apply depending on the course. Since the registration period and methods vary by learning center, inquiries can be made to the respective Neighborhood Learning Center or the Mapo-gu Office Education Support Division for guidance if needed.

Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “We have expanded the Neighborhood Learning Centers to 10 locations to guarantee residents’ right to nearby learning and provide more learning opportunities to the residents.” He added, “We will continue to strive to create an environment where residents can enjoy various lifelong learning benefits.”
