[Asia Economy Reporter Kim So-young] A university student working part-time at a gas station was seriously injured in an accident caused by a vehicle that suddenly started moving during refueling.
On the 17th, a post titled "I flew off as the car started moving while refueling at the gas station" along with a closed-circuit television (CCTV) video was uploaded on the car-specialized community Bobae Dream.
The author, identified as A, a university student working part-time at the gas station, wrote, "Around 9 p.m. on the 14th, after processing a card payment, I handed the card back to the customer and asked them to wait while refueling, but the customer took the card and started moving about 20 seconds later."
He added, "The fuel dispenser was damaged, and I got caught on the fuel hose and was thrown into the air," and lamented, "The customer claims that since I was standing right next to them and returned the card, they thought the refueling was finished and started moving."
The CCTV footage of the gas station released by A shows a black vehicle starting off with the fuel nozzle still inserted in the fuel tank, and A getting caught on the fuel hose and hitting the wall hard. The video also shows the driver getting out of the car, covering their head, and approaching A, who is unable to get up.
He said, "The driver claims they came over to ask if I was okay, and I said I was fine. After that, the driver spoke with the gas station manager, left their contact information, and left the scene, while I continued to serve other customers."
He continued, "However, about 15 minutes after the accident, symptoms from a head injury began to appear," and said, "I called the gas station manager several times asking what had just happened, repeated the same question 2-3 minutes later, and again a few minutes after that, but I could not remember anything about the accident," describing the aftereffects of a strong head impact.
He expressed frustration, saying, "A few hours after the accident, I had a CT scan at the hospital emergency room. I waited at the hospital for a checkup on the 17th, but the driver neither contacted me nor filed an auto insurance claim, so I couldn’t even get tested for the traffic accident."
A said, "When my parents called the car owner to ask them to file an insurance claim, they angrily said, 'Get compensation from the gas station. I am only 20% at fault. The gas station is 80% at fault,'" expressing his indignation.
A eventually reported the accident to the police but said he is still suffering from dizziness and headaches.
Upon hearing this news, netizens responded with comments such as, "Make sure to get everything you deserve from someone who is arrogant despite being at fault," "Such a tragic accident. I hope you receive thorough treatment so there are no aftereffects," and "Get a medical certificate and report to the police."
On the 18th, the author updated the original post, adding, "Thank you all. The perpetrator has now processed the insurance, and I just completed hospital admission procedures and was admitted. An MRI is scheduled for today."
