Providing Remote Mentoring Classes to Support Career Exploration for Students with Disabilities
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Education announced on the 16th that it has appointed a 'Career Mentoring Group for Persons with Disabilities' who have pioneered their own paths in various fields and will start remote video career mentoring classes for middle and high school students with disabilities.
The Career Mentoring Group for Persons with Disabilities consists of 35 diverse career leaders categorized by disability types such as visual, auditory, physical, and developmental disabilities, as well as by fields including culture, arts, sports, education, and ICT. Fourteen vocational professionals with developmental disabilities were selected as career mentors, and workplace colleagues or related institution personnel support the classes.
Based on their experiences as professionals with disabilities, they provide practical career counseling and classes enriched with real-world insights. Last year, remote video career mentoring for students with disabilities in the education sector was expanded to other fields.
Additionally, through inter-agency collaboration such as financial support for projects via the Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled, the program aims to eliminate service blind spots between education and employment and provide career exploration opportunities closely related to actual occupations.
Students with disabilities who wish to apply for remote video career mentoring can do so as a class unit through the remote video career mentoring website at their school. The mentoring operation period is from May to November.
Jeon Jinseok, Director of Student Support at the Ministry of Education, stated, "We hope that students with disabilities can design their own career paths and grow into talents who can achieve their dreams and goals." He added, "The Ministry of Education will continue to strengthen inter-ministerial collaboration with the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and other departments to systematically support the career and employment of students with disabilities."
