[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Moon Seong-hyeok, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, visited the funeral hall of the late Lee Seon-ho, who died while working at Pyeongtaek Port, on the 14th and said, "I sincerely apologize to the deceased and the bereaved family for not managing the safety of port workers more carefully."
Minister Moon said, "As the port management authority, I deeply regret that I visited late despite the accident occurring at Pyeongtaek Port, a national facility."
After paying his respects, he told Lee’s father, "To ensure that the deceased’s death is not in vain, we will use this accident as an opportunity to establish a systematic framework to strengthen safety within the port," adding, "We will require each stevedoring company to establish safety management plans and introduce a port safety inspector system so that the government can conduct regular direct safety inspections."
He continued, "As President Moon Jae-in mentioned yesterday, to prevent such tragic accidents from happening again at national facilities like ports, we will conduct urgent safety inspections together with related ministries such as the Ministry of Employment and Labor and promptly establish measures to prevent recurrence."
Afterwards, Minister Moon visited Pyeongtaek Port to inspect the actual status of port safety management with relevant officials.
