Seongbuk-gu Co-production 'Urineun Nongdam-i(Ani)ya' Wins at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] 'We Are Not Joking' (written by Lee Eun-yong, directed by Koo Ja-hye), co-produced by Seongbuk-gu, Seongbuk Cultural Foundation, and the theater company 'Here, Obviously, Theater,' won two awards at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards: Best Play and Best Actor (Choi Soon-jin).

The Baeksang Arts Awards, established in 1965, is the most prestigious comprehensive arts award.

'We Are Not Joking' is the first co-production work of the Seongbuk Cultural Foundation. It has been praised for delicately portraying the lives and struggles of transgender individuals and giving voice to minorities in our society.

Actor Choi Soon-jin, who won the Best Actor award, expressed gratitude and respect to writer Lee Eun-yong, the actors, staff, and Seongbuk Cultural Foundation, saying, "I realized that what we take for granted can be violent and unequal to some beings, and I wanted to convey from my heart the message that no one should hate or discriminate against others."

In his acceptance speech for the Best Play award, actor Jeon Bak-chan said, "Since the premiere of 'And Then My Sister Knocked on the Door' at a university in 2019, the performance has grown into a production with the theater company 'Here, Obviously, Theater' and writer Lee Eun-yong in 2020. Throughout this process, the Seongbuk Cultural Foundation, which operates the Mia-ri Gogae Arts Theater in the region, was there. Without the audiences who filled the theater and the theater staff who personally handled disinfection machines late into the night every day, this play probably would not have existed."
