Sacheon Seonjeon-ri Cretaceous Branch Cover Fossil Site to Be Designated as Natural Monument

Final Decision on Designation as Natural Monument After 30-Day Notice Period

Sacheon Seonjeon-ri Cretaceous Branch Cover Fossil Site to Be Designated as Natural Monument

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Gyeongsangnam-do announced on the 14th that the 'Sacheon Seonjeon-ri Cretaceous Branch Covering Deposit' is scheduled to be designated as a national natural monument.

The 'Sacheon Seonjeon-ri Cretaceous Branch Covering Deposit' is a carbonate growth body developed in the Mesozoic sedimentary layers of the Seonjeon-ri coastal area.

It has a formation process similar to stromatolites designated as natural monuments (such as the Yeongwol Mungok-ri desiccation structures and stromatolites), but it is distinguished by its shape and formation environment.

The 'Sacheon Seonjeon-ri Cretaceous Branch Covering Deposit' has a cylindrical shape grown with branches as the nucleus, rather than a 'growth form.'

Additionally, the branch covering developed in the Seonjeon-ri area is a rare case both domestically and internationally, found in geological era sedimentary layers, with a large development scale and good preservation state.

After a 30-day notice period to collect opinions from various sectors, the 'Sacheon Seonjeon-ri Cretaceous Branch Covering Deposit' is expected to be finally designated as a national natural monument following the review by the Cultural Heritage Committee.
