Formation of Joint Excavation Team Centered on Students Majoring in Gogomisul History
The National Gyeongju Cultural Heritage Research Institute and Dongguk University Gyeongju Campus will excavate three Silla wooden coffin tombs in the Jjoksaem district around the Gyeongju Daereungwon area until next month. This is their second joint excavation following the dolmen in Guhwak-dong, Gyeongju, conducted in June last year. Under mutual cooperation and joint responsibility, they provide opportunities for both research and education.
The Gyeongju Cultural Heritage Research Institute supports technology, administration, and budget. Dongguk University Gyeongju Campus forms a joint excavation team centered on students majoring in Archaeology and Art History. An official explained, "Students participate not only in coursework but also in the report publication process, gaining comprehensive experience in archaeological theory and practice."
The three Silla wooden coffin tombs under investigation are presumed to have been constructed before the full-scale development of stone-cist wooden coffin tombs, where the Silla people built wooden coffins, piled stones around them, and covered them with soil. The two institutions plan to investigate the interiors to reveal the structure, construction techniques, and the patterns of buried artifacts.
