'Seongnam Sanseong-daero S-BRT Introduction'... Scheduled for Operation in 2024

'Seongnam Sanseong-daero S-BRT Introduction'... Scheduled for Operation in 2024 [Provided by Gyeonggi Province]

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] As early as 2024, a 'premium Bus Rapid Transit system (S-BRT)' is expected to be introduced on Sanseong-daero in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do.


'S-BRT (Super Bus Rapid Transit)' is called a premium BRT that offers subway-level speed and punctuality through systems such as dedicated lanes, exclusive vehicles, and priority signals, beyond the conventional BRT which mainly operates on dedicated lanes.


Gyeonggi-do announced on the 13th, "Starting this year, we plan to actively promote the 'Seongnam S-BRT project' in collaboration with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee (DAEGANGWI) and Seongnam City."


'Sanseong-daero S-BRT' is the first phase section of the Seongnam S-BRT project (Bokjeong Station Intersection ~ Moran Intersection ~ Namhansanseong Entrance, 10.2 km), covering 5.2 km from Moran Intersection through Dandae Five-way Intersection to Namhansanseong Entrance.


Out of the total project cost of 41.9 billion KRW for the Seongnam S-BRT, 22.8 billion KRW will be invested to maintain and build facilities necessary for S-BRT operation such as central bus-only lanes, smart bus stops, and bus priority signal systems.


The Sanseong-daero S-BRT project was selected as an S-BRT pilot project by DAEGANGWI in January last year, and since March this year, Seongnam City has started feasibility studies and basic plan establishment services, preparing for project implementation.


After completing detailed design in 2023, construction will begin and be completed by 2024, followed by operation.


Additionally, the second phase of the Seongnam S-BRT project, 'Seongnam-daero S-BRT (Moran Intersection ~ Bokjeong Station Intersection, 5.0 km),' is planned to be completed by 2025 and linked with the Seoul Songpa-daero and Heolleung-ro BRT (currently under design).


DAEGANGWI and the province recently stated that as transportation demand in the metropolitan area continues to increase due to new town developments, they intend to accelerate efforts to establish the 'Bus Rapid Transit system' as a solution to metropolitan transportation issues.


Park Seong-sik, Director of Road Safety Division, said, "The BRT project provides fast and convenient public transportation services at a cost of about 4.6% of light rail construction expenses," adding, "We will continue to promote the construction and operation activation of the metropolitan area Bus Rapid Transit system."
