Seoul Energy Dream Center Operates 'Participatory Climate Crisis Education Program'

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul Energy Dream Center announced on the 13th that it will operate various climate and energy education programs that the whole family can enjoy together in May, Family Month, and will hold planned exhibitions and participatory events to enhance understanding of environmental issues.

Seoul Energy Dream Center is an energy self-sufficient eco-friendly public building located in Peace Park, Sangam-dong, operating various energy and climate change exhibition and experience programs for citizens.

Citizen participation programs include "The Energy Zero House I Dream Of," which explores zero-energy building technologies applied at the Energy Dream Center; "Eco-friendly Architect," a career education program in the environmental field; and "Renewable Energy Classroom," where participants build solar-powered cars to understand the principles of renewable energy.

On the first floor Dream Gallery, a special exhibition titled "Climate Crisis, Coming" is being held to raise awareness of the reality and seriousness of the climate crisis. Along with special exhibition explanations conducted by expert instructors, free experiential programs are offered where participants can directly engage in climate crisis emergency actions, such as making flipbooks titled "My Own Climate Crisis Story" and creating "Climate Crisis Campaign Placards."

To commemorate Earth Day and World Environment Day and to raise environmental awareness among future generations, the "3rd Children's Environmental Drawing Contest" is underway under the theme "Time for Earth's Recovery." Those wishing to participate can register online or on-site by the 23rd, comply with social distancing, draw pictures outdoors on the lawn with their families, and submit them by 5 p.m. on the day of the event. Awards will be presented simultaneously online and offline on June 5, Environment Day, selecting 1 grand prize winner, 3 excellence awards, 6 merit awards, 9 encouragement awards, and 11 honorable mentions.

At the Solar Park of Seoul Energy Dream Center, a solar mist system has been installed, providing citizens with opportunities to experience climate and renewable energy through cloud-shaped mist sprays and rainbows created by sunlight refraction.

The Solar Park, located in the outdoor space of Seoul Energy Dream Center, was created with sponsorship from Aramco Korea under the theme "Where energy becomes play and play becomes energy." It is designed as a space where people can naturally feel energy through play and relaxation, moving beyond simple structure installations. The Solar Park consists of a solar-powered rest area, Solar Pine (a design rest area), Solar Mist, and Milky Way Hill. The solar mist, powered by solar energy, serves as a climate crisis response facility with effects on mitigating urban heat island phenomena and fine dust.

Additionally, energy self-sufficient village leader capacity-building training for the general public is planned for the 18th and 21st. Through this training, participants will understand the importance of energy self-sufficient villages in responding to the climate crisis and strengthen the capabilities of these villages through education on greenhouse gas reduction practices.

Kim Yeon-ji, Director of the Environmental Citizen Cooperation Division of Seoul City, said, "I hope this climate change and energy experiential education at Seoul Energy Dream Center, a leading zero-energy building in Korea, will provide an opportunity to recognize the climate crisis issue and seek practical ways to implement it in daily life."
