[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] The Broadway theater district in the United States, which had been shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will fully reopen this September.

On the 11th (local time), US CNN and other media reported that New York State has eased COVID-19 restrictions, allowing Broadway theaters to reopen from September after an 18-month closure.

According to reports, Broadway hits such as 'Hamilton', 'Wicked', 'The Lion King', and 'Chicago' will resume performances starting September 14 at the Richard Rodgers, Gershwin, Minskoff, and Ambassador theaters, respectively.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on the 5th that Broadway performances will resume in September, allowing theaters to fill all seats as before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Governor Cuomo said, "Broadway is not only a part of New York's identity but also an important economic factor," adding, "I am excited that the curtains will rise again."

'Aladdin' and 'Jagged Little Pill' will also restart performances from the end of September, and 'The Phantom of the Opera' and 'Tina: The Tina Turner Musical' are scheduled to open in October. A new musical about the 'King of Pop' Michael Jackson titled 'Michael Jackson' will premiere early next year.

Before the COVID-19 outbreak in 2019, 14.6 million people visited Broadway's 41 theaters, and ticket sales reached $1.8 billion (approximately 2 trillion KRW).
