AI Developers and Operators Provided with Self-Assessment Standards for Personal Data Protection
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] The Personal Information Protection Commission announced on the 12th that it plans to release an ‘AI-related Personal Information Protection Self-Checklist’ by the end of this month. This checklist will guide AI service developers and operators on mandatory obligations and reference points under personal information protection laws, enabling them to self-assess and utilize the guidelines.
The self-checklist is a guide containing compliance requirements and reference points under the ‘Personal Information Protection Act’ to ensure that personal information is processed lawfully and safely during AI development and operation. The main contents include six key principles of AI-related personal information protection, an overall flowchart for self-assessment, detailed check items (54 in total) covering 16 core inspection areas at each stage of personal information processing, and reference notes. AI developers and operators can autonomously conduct assessments according to the step-by-step check items and also use the checklist for educational purposes.
The Personal Information Protection Commission plans to support the creation of an environment where users can conveniently and safely use AI services by promoting on-site consulting to resolve difficulties related to personal information protection in the AI industry. It will also continuously update the checklist by reflecting field feedback, thereby responding to the safe use of personal information and the advancement of AI technology.
Yoon Jong-in, Chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission, stated, “Various ethical issues such as privacy infringement caused by AI have recently emerged. Since vast amounts of personal information can be utilized during AI service development and operation, personal information protection is more important than ever.” He added, “We hope that the use of the self-checklist will be the starting point for processing personal information lawfully and safely, protecting privacy, and creating a trustworthy AI usage environment.”
