[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] Jeong Se-gyun, a leading presidential candidate from the ruling party and former Prime Minister, announced on the 11th, “I propose the introduction of a ‘National Skill Development Support Fund’ system to enable citizens to smoothly develop job skills suited to their aptitudes without financial difficulties.”

On the morning of the same day, at the Gwanghwamun Forum, a meeting of Democratic Party lawmakers affiliated with Jeong Se-gyun held at the Glad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, Jeong suggested, “How about providing 20 million KRW per person over a lifetime, with a maximum of 5 million KRW annually?”

He emphasized, “If we push for a comprehensive reform of the current adult lifelong education and vocational training system to ensure that the budget is not wasted, we can reduce the burden on citizens seeking new workplaces.”

He also revealed plans to establish a government ‘Intellectual Property Office’ to protect the intellectual property rights of startup companies for the transition to an innovative economy, and a ‘Future Seed Account System’ where the state supports 100 million KRW in a 20-year installment savings plan when a child is born.

Jeong also shared his economic ideas. Regarding the compensation system for self-employed losses, he said, “Isn’t it right to proceed with legislation immediately, considering the citizens in difficult situations?” and added, “We should actively consider measures to address the public demand for retroactive compensation through additional support funded by fiscal input.”

For economic recovery, he stressed, “We must use the Fourth Industrial Revolution, data, and AI (artificial intelligence) as growth engines,” and added, “Along with this, we need to change the framework and direction of the economy through energy transition, a carbon-neutral society, and ESG (environmental, social responsibility, and governance).”

Through this lecture, Jeong appears to have embarked on a full-scale presidential campaign. He appealed, “I will confront all inequalities of our time,” and urged, “Please join me on the path to bold recovery and a more equal Republic of Korea.”
