Providing Smart Ship Big Data Analysis Service, Discovering Insights Needed for Vessel Operation
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) is leading the acceleration of digital transformation in the global shipbuilding and shipping industry through advanced smart ship technology.
On the 10th, DSME announced that it has officially launched the DS4 (DSME Smartship Solutions) Shore Operations Center located at its Siheung Research and Development (R&D) Campus, providing shipowners with 'data analysis services' that have received favorable reviews.
DSME's smart ship platform collects and stores vast amounts of data generated from vessels currently in operation, monitors the status of key onboard equipment, and transmits this information in real time to the company's shore control center (DS4 Shore Operations Center). The control center collects and monitors operational data from multiple ships across global waters, integrates and analyzes external data such as weather and port information, fuel prices, freight indices, and economic indicators, and provides customized services tailored to each shipowner. Shipowners receiving this tailored information reportedly find it useful for safer and more efficient vessel operations.
Recently, the global shipping industry has been grappling with measures to address frequent container losses at sea due to rough weather and the increasing size of vessels. In this context, DSME’s service has attracted attention by analyzing the unique structural characteristics of ships and weather data such as wave height to predict vessel movements and provide navigation guidance that minimizes container loss. Additionally, by sharing real-time data on the status of key onboard equipment such as engines and LNG tanks, the system enables flexible responses to various emergencies and early diagnosis of potential defects.
The analyzed information is also expected to have a positive effect on the co-growth of related industries. It supports equipment manufacturers with actual measurement data necessary for the operation and new product development of key equipment including ship engines, and contributes to the establishment of infrastructure required for ship inspection and verification by classification societies.
DSME plans to expand its research into various convergent fields and take a leading role in building digital infrastructure in preparation for the upcoming era of autonomous ships.
DSME has adopted smart ship solutions as a standard feature in all shipbuilding specifications. In addition to the current service targets of ultra-large container ships and LNG carriers, it plans to expand the scope to all types of merchant ships, naval vessels, and offshore projects, providing analysis information based on DS4 technology.
